About this deal

If you want to support the Heath Robinson Museum, you can sign up to the mailing list found on HeathRobinson. His machines are very culturally prescriptive, but the ones we have now are global and interchangeable.

His father Thomas, an illustrator and engraver, had to illustrate the main news story each week for the Penny Illustrated Paper. Heath Robinson was too old to enlist for WW1; he took on two German POWs to garden after the Armistice. The machines he drew were frequently powered by steam boilers or kettles, heated by candles or a spirit lamp and usually kept running by balding, bespectacled men in overalls.

He went on to illustrate Shakespeare, Kipling, and more of his own books, in colour and black and white.

He was an accomplished artist that produced exquisite drawings from Shakespeare's plays to Fairy Tales and in my opinion his was fundamental in the development of the "clear line" inking style made famous especially by Franco- Belgian comic artists from Hergè to Uderzo. In his introduction to The Art of Rube Goldberg by Rube's granddaughter Jennifer George, Adam Gopnik argues that Goldberg is the more credible of the two.The Water Babies and The Pilgrim's Progress before writing his first of three children's book in 1902, The Adventures of Uncle Lubin. The Heath Robinson Museum opened in October 2016 to house a collection of nearly 1,000 original artworks owned by The William Heath Robinson Trust. At the time of Heath Robinson's death in 1944, only a minority of the public remembered his work as a serious illustrator. For those hoping to have excellent quality prints of these excellent Heath Robinson artworks you’ll be very disappointed in the mixed quality this book offers. But if it's kept his name alive and that leads people back to his other work, that's great," concludes Beare.

Heath Robinson’s work was so well regarded throughout the First World War that the US Army paid for him to go out and join them in France in 1918 – his one and only journey outside the British Isles. His grandfather Thomas, his father Thomas Robinson (1838–1902) and brothers Thomas Heath Robinson (1869–1954) and Charles Robinson (1870–1937) all worked as illustrators. id=GTM-PWMWG4" height="0" width="0" style="display:none;visibility:hidden">
