This book would be a great way to lead into activities and lessons about different countries and cultures. Taking young readers on an adventure through ten different countries, this book also introduces children to maps and entertains them with rhyme along the way. Although these students may not be able to travel the world at this moment, it shows them about different cultures.

At the end of the story a list showing all of Granny's souvenirs and the number that she bought is provided. This is an excellent book for young children, which can help develop counting as granny takes the reader on an adventure around the world with her. This stylishly illustrated counting book from a Best New Illustrator, opens with a vibrant cockerel crowing to welcome the day and ends with a solitary barn owl flying off the page and slipping into the night. My Granny Went to Market: A Round-The-World Counting Rhyme by Stella Blackstone is a rhyming book about a Granny who takes a magic carpet ride around the world. As it says in the title it is written in rhyme and every place she visits she picks up a certain amount of objects (one more than the previous place) therefore is a counting book also. I enjoyed reading this book because in some of the cultures I did not realize one of their customs and normalities.

The obvious one being Geography-using a world map and pinning all the places that Granny has visited;children can learn about the different cultures around the world. This rhyming story will take young readers on an adventure to different countries while teaching them to count along the way. This book teaches us a lot about cultural objects from around the world, it also uses a rhythm of counting to show the journey throughout the book. There is a lot going on, so someone would be able to play a game of iSpy or different counting activities. I like that some cultural elements are explained- for example, the names of the cats Granny gets in Thailand, Puyin and Puchai, are the Thai words for "little girl" and "little boy".

Reading this book, I actually learned about different cultures and things that went along with them. The illustrations reveal traditional dress and environments including Australia and Switzerland… An entertaining story, while revealing a captivating illustration on each page of the very finest quality. Fly away with Granny as she takes a magic carpet ride around the world, collecting souvenirs from each location! Definitely will use in my teaching as there are multiple opportunities for studying cultures and their history. This is a fun way of showing the reader what different cultures and places look like around the world, along with learning to count!
