About this deal

So many irrelevant personal stories were shared by the author in this book that made it impossible for me to relate while reading. Most known for her spoken word poetry and work with Project VOICE, Sarah Kay manages to pull us into her world through her masterful art of painting pictures with letters. Both fresh and wise, Kay’s poetry allows readers to join in on her journey of discovering herself and the world around her. They felt deep, touching, clever, real, conveyed oceans of feeling and resonated with some of my own experiences.

She was a featured poet on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry Jam" in 2006, and that year she was also the youngest poet to compete in the National Poetry Slam. However, plenty of times, a poem is not necessarily about my family, but my family is serving as the setting for the actual subject of the poem. I thought on paper her poems might seem flat and lack that excitement and passion she had conveyed with ease on screen. I didn't know anything about Sarah Kay or her poetry before I met her at the signing for Jonny Sun's book this past June, but once I heard her read her poem "The Paradox," I was immediately enthralled and added her poetry collection, No Matter The Wreckage, to my TBR and my Christmas want list. I'm not sure if I'll pick up more from this author if this is her usual style, and don't reccommend this if you want to read something more lyrical, as I did. When the weight gives, and all that extra rope comes hurtling towards you, how even though you've won, you still end up with muddy knees and burns on your hands?

She is an education advocate and keynote speaker for education organizations like NAIS, ECIS, AISA, and IBO, among others. For some I imagine reading the poetry will not compare to watching her present, but I think that that is a limitation of the medium, more than a complaint about the book. My self-confidence can be measured out in teaspoons, mixed into my poetry, and it still always tastes funny in my mouth. Here are some of the poems from this collection performed by Sarah: (I highly recommend watching them!No Matter the Wreckage presents readers with new and beloved poetry that showcases Kay’s talent for celebrating family, love, travel, and unlikely romance between inanimate objects (“The Toothbrush to the Bicycle Tire”).

It seems like these poets sometimes just put a bunch of random stuff together, punctuate it with spaces and almost dare, challenge you to finally yell "What is this? Both fresh and wise, Kay's poetry allows readers to join in on her journey of discovering herself and the world around her. It doesn't have to rhyme necessarily, but it has to have a certain flow, a special way with the words - metaphoric or clever or vivid, but it has to surprise you or pierce your heart. One aspect that really took my breath away was Kay’s ability to render ideas of her own into intricate details with the significance still intact. The poetry books I have read so far are either lackluster or bland in terms of writing, but this book completely changed my viewpoint on poetry. Kay holds a Masters Degree in The Art of Teaching from Brown University and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Grinnell College.
